Did you know that there are hundreds of different varieties of avocado? Isn’t that mad? According to Healthline, more than 50 different types or varieties are grown in the state of Florida in the U.S. alone – but which avocado variety has the most flavour?

I’m taking a deep dive into the world of avocados and answering all of your avocado questions. Grab yourself a cup of coffee, people. I’m about to share some very interesting avo-info with you.

Which Avocado Variety Has the Most Flavour?

As with most things in life, flavour and taste are subjective, which means that flavours you like won’t necessarily be flavours that I like. But, bearing that in mind, there are still a few varieties of avocado that are said to taste better than the rest.

🥑 Hass Avocado

As well as being the most popular, some believe the Hass variety of avocado to be the best-tasting, although it has its critics as well as its fans.

🥑 Sir Prize Avocado

The Sir Prize avocado is said to be one of the best tasting avocados you can get your hands on, often referred to as the grandchild of the humble and popular Hass avocado. It is one of the specifically-bred hybrids I told you about previously – a Mexican avocado and the Hass avocado (hence the grandchild nickname).

Because of this hybrid mix, the flesh of the Sir Prize avocado tastes bold and full-flavoured, with a little nuttiness to it. The texture of the flesh has been described as soft, smooth and buttery, making it an ideal avocado type to use in recipes that call for soft, ripe avo-flesh – smoothies, ice cream, and similar.

Not only that, because the Sir Prize is relatively big and has a smaller stone size than other varieties, you get more flesh and less skin/stone.

Technically, the Sir Prize avocado could also win an award for most economical!

(Sadly, they are more difficult to get your hands on in the UK!)

🥑 Fuerte Avocado

As well as the Sir Prize avocado variety, the Fuerte variety is also said to be one of the best-flavoured avocados – and the latter is much easier to get hold of than the former!

Many people refer to the Fuerte variety as the “original high-quality California avocado”, which gives you some idea of how high on the list of popularity it is; except, with this one, the popularity is for taste, not for freshness or how long-lasting it is.

The Fuerte avocado is primarily grown in Florida, and it is pear-shaped and has slightly less pimpled or dimpled skin than Hass and other varieties. It is easier to peel, too.

When you do peel the Fuerte avocado, the flesh is paler than with the typical Hass variety, and the flavour of the fruit is much creamier and (as some might say) more luxurious.

What Are the Three Types of Avocados?

There are actually hundreds (believed to be more than 500!) of different varieties or types of avocado grown around the world, many of which are classed as hybrid varieties. What this means is that the avocados have been specifically bred to create a new, hybrid blend of older varieties, bringing each of their ‘good’ traits into the new, hybrid fruit, and leaving all of their ‘bad’ traits behind.

There are three main ‘groups’ or strains of avocado when you get down to the basics, however.

These are known as Indian, Guatemalan, and Mexican avocados.

What is the Most Popular Variety of Avocado?

The variety or type of avocado that you are likely to buy from your local grocery store or supermarket is usually the Hass avocado.

This one is known to grow all-year-long, is mostly grown in Mexico and California, US, and is one of the darkest varieties at peak ripeness. This one can even go as far as to a purple, almost-black shade when it is ready to be eaten.

Flavour-wise, the humble and very popular Hass avocado has a taste that is described as quite nutty, but thick and buttery, too.

It’s a very good all-rounder – easy to work with, great flavours, and a smooth, buttery texture when ripe.

Believe it or not, despite being one of the most widely available varieties of avocado, the Hass variety isn’t believed to be the best tasting, or the type with the best, smoothest, and most buttery texture.

The reason that Hass avocados are so popular around the globe, including right here in the UK, is because they travel large distances well – which makes them great for exporting/importing. Other varieties just don’t fare well when travelling long distances, often turning up already ripe (people prefer to buy slightly under-ripe), or worse: overripe and bitter.

Can You Get Hass Avocados in the UK?

Yes, you can get Hass avocados in the UK. In fact, that’s the variety you’re likely to pick up from the shelves of any local supermarket, the next time you buy one.

Are Any Avocado Varieties Grown in the UK?

Generally, no. Avocados do not grow well in the UK.

It is possible to grow an avocado tree in a British back garden, but they do not flourish in our typically dull and miserable weather. The best and most popular types of avocado grow in places like sunny Florida or California – sunny climates with lovely, warm temperatures. It’s the kind of weather that Britain only gets once a year, if it’s lucky.

(Ironically, I’m writing this in the middle of Britain’s first 40-degree-plus heatwave!)
