Apple pie is a delicious flavour (and dish) that fits right in with the autumn and winter theme – especially around Christmas. The warming flavours are perfect for chilly nights, and who doesn’t find the aroma of pie comforting? Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or an occasional drinker, this hot apple pie coffee recipe is a must-try.
How to Make Hot Apple Pie Coffee
This delightful blend harmoniously marries the rich essence of freshly brewed coffee with the nostalgic sweetness of homemade apple pie. A comforting aroma and a smooth taste make it a perfect treat for coffee enthusiasts seeking a unique and cozy experience in every sip.
Ingredients
You’ll need the following ingredients to make this hot coffee beverage, and I’ve added details of alternatives and substitutions beneath them.
- Milk or plant-based alternative – 3/4 of your favourite cup
- Apple pie syrup – 2 tablespoons
- Espresso – 1 or 2 shots
- Squirty cream – optional, for decoration
- Cinnamon-sugar mix – optional, for decoration
To make espresso-like coffee without an espresso machine, use a Moka pot or a French press. For Moka pot, add water to the bottom chamber, coffee grounds in the filter, and heat until the top chamber fills with strong coffee. For French press, steep fine coffee grounds in hot water, then press the plunger down. Alternatively, you can buy instant espresso coffee these days, and cafetiere or home coffee machine coffee.
Equipment
To steam milk without a steamer, heat milk on the stovetop or microwave until hot but not boiling. For froth, whisk vigorously, use a hand frother, or blend briefly in a blender. Gently tap to remove bubbles, then pour the frothed milk into your coffee or desired beverage.
That’s if you don’t have a milk steamer or frother at home, of course.
- Milk steamer (or alternative, see below)
- Your favourite mug, cup, or heatproof glass
- Tablespoon
- Teaspoon or long-handled spoon
Apple Pie Hot Coffee Recipe: Step-by-Step
Once you’ve got your ingredients and equipment together, it’s time to start whipping up a delicious coffee storm. Are you ready?
Let’s go.
Step One
To start with, you’ll need to measure out the milk, which should fill three-quarters of your favourite mug, cup, or heatproof glass. Pour the milk into a separate container, preferably one you can steam it in.
Step Two
You’ll need to add one or two tablespoons of the apple pie syrup in the glass first. If you’re using a transparent glass mug, you could drizzle the syrup down the sides for decoration. Alternatively, you could just pop it at the bottom. There are no rules. Even if there were, I’d recommend breaking them.
Step Three
If you don’t have a steamer, use a frother or warm the milk on the stove. It should be hot and frothy/steamy when you pour it into your mug, over the apple pie syrup.
I have made steamed or warmed the milk in a number of ways, making flavoured syrup coffee drinks like this one. A small handheld whisker will forth warm milk nicely, and you can warm the milk itself in the microwave or on the hob in a saucepan.
This drink is sweet enough for me, but this is the stage at which you would add sugar and mix.
You can also mix the apple pie syrup into the milk, but it will beat out some of the milk froth. (Just a word of warning.)
Step Four
Now pour the shot of the espresso into the mug, over the steamed milk. At this stage is ready to drink, but most people mix the syrup, milk, and espresso together to combine all the flavours.
Step Five
If you’re interested in giving your hot apple pie coffee drink the full treatment (or you want to impress a guest), top it off with squirty creamy and a dusting of a cinnamon-sugar mix. Alternatively, sprinkles work well, especially coloured for a theme – orange and black for Halloween, green and red for Christmas, etc.
Hot Apple Pie Coffee Substitutions
First and foremost, you can use pretty much any kind of milk or milk substitute you like to make this hot apple pie coffee drink. I’m a semi-skimmed girl, but you can use full fat, skimmed, oat, almond, hazelnut, soya, or any other kind.
Alongside cinnamon, you could add a vast array of festive spices and flavourings. Go wild and experiment! A few to consider include nutmeg, ginger, cloves, anise, cardamon, vanilla, allspice, and even fruity (such as cranberry) flavoured syrups.
Delicious apple pie-flavoured coffee combines the comforting aroma of freshly baked pie with the rich, smooth taste of coffee to create a drink that makes cold nights that little bit warmer. I hope you enjoy taste testing this hot apple pie coffee recipe as much as I did. Remember, though: you can tweak and customise the recipe as much as you like. Add booze, different flavours of syrup, a totally different topping…
The possibilities are, quite literally, endless.
