A café latte, often simply referred to as a Latte, is a popular coffee drink that originated in Italy and is now enjoyed worldwide. With a variety of flavours and styles, there’s a version for everyone, no matter the taste preference of dietary requirement – and that’s why I’m going to share with you, how to make a café latte.

What is a Café Latte?

This hot beverage consists of a shot of espresso combined with steamed milk and a small amount of frothed milk on top.

The word “latte” itself means “milk” in Italian, which reflects the importance of milk in this coffee preparation.

How to Make a Café Latte: Step-by-Step Guide

Café lattes are usually served in larger coffee mugs or cups to accommodate the volume of milk and foam. They are known for their mild and smooth flavour, which makes them a popular choice for those who enjoy a creamier coffee experience without the intensity of a straight espresso shot.

A shot of espresso forms the base of the latte. This very concentrated variety of coffee has a very bold and strong flavour, and it serves as the foundation for many a coffee beverage, both hot and cold. Water at a hot temperature are forced through the beans of coffee after they have been finely ground.

  • 1 shot of espresso (about 30 to 60 ml)
  • 1 cup of steamed milk
  • 1-2 tablespoons of frothed milk (optional, for a creamier texture)
  • Sugar or sweetener (optional, to taste)

Some people like to add sugar, honey, flavored syrups, or spices like cinnamon or vanilla to sweeten or flavor their latte. However, this is entirely optional and depends on individual taste preferences.

Make a Café Latte: Instructions

Lattes can be customized with various syrups and flavourings to add extra taste. Popular choices include vanilla, caramel, hazelnut, chocolate, and more. These flavoured lattes are sometimes referred to by specific names, such as “vanilla latte” or “caramel latte.”

Let’s stick to the basics for just now though, eh?

Step One

Brew the espresso.

If you have an espresso machine, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to make a shot of espresso. If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can use a stovetop espresso maker to brew strong coffee that resembles espresso.

Steam the milk.

Pour the milk into a steaming pitcher. If your espresso machine has a steam wand, use it to steam the milk until it reaches a creamy and velvety texture. If you don’t have a steam wand, you can heat the milk on the stovetop and then use a handheld milk frother to create some foam.

Step Three

Froth the milk (optional).

If you want a creamier texture, you can froth some additional milk using a milk frother or a French press. Simply heat the milk slightly and then use the frother or the French press plunger to create foam.

Step Four

Combine the espresso and milk.

Do this by pouring the shot of espresso into a large coffee mug. Over the espresso, pour the steamed milk but don’t let the foam slide out. You can stop it from holding a spoon at the spout. If you want froth, pour it all in. It’s your drink, after all.

Step Five

Sweeten (optional).

If you like your latte sweetened, you can add sugar, honey, or any sweetener of your choice. Stir well to incorporate the sweetness.

Step Six

Serve and enjoy.
