Have you decided to cook pasta for dinner but aren’t sure how many grams of fusilli pasta per person to cook? You will find the answers to your question right here, plus a few tips on how you can use up those fusilli leftovers when you accidentally cook too much. 

(We all do that, right?!)

So, How Many Grams of Fusilli Pasta Per Person Should You Cook?

If you are cooking with store-bought pasta, it will usually say on the packaging how much, in grams, you should cook per person. In my experience, this is usually on the smaller side, so I add a little more in for good measure. (And then accidentally end up cooking too much.) 

I just took a look at the back of the fusilli pasta packaging I have in my cupboard. The serving suggestion is 75 grams of uncooked (dry) pasta per person. 

But that’s not the only answer…

How Many Grams of Uncooked Fusilli Pasta Per Person?

The amount of uncooked pasta you add to the saucepan, per person, will very much depend on the dish you are creating, as well as when you are eating or serving it.

Lunchtime pasta dishes are usually smaller for Italians than an evening meal, so a lunchtime dish would generally contain fewer grams of fusilli pasta. The same can be said for pasta-based appetisers. 

Evening meals or main meals are larger, with more pasta per person. If you are making a larger main meal with pasta, rather than an appetiser or a lunchtime dish, you will want to factor in slightly more uncooked fusilli pasta. 

If you are cooking fusilli pasta with the intention of using it for a side dish, you will also want to cook less pasta than you would if you were creating a pasta-based main dish or meal.

You will want to cook the following approximate amounts:

If you’re cooking a starter or lunchtime dish, cook between 60 and 80 grams of uncooked fusilli pasta per person.

If you’re cooking a main evening meal, cook between 80 and 100 grams of uncooked fusilli pasta per person.  

How Many Grams of Cooked Fusilli Pasta Per Person?

If you have cooked fusilli pasta left over from the night before’s dinner, you could always use it in another dinner meal, appetiser, or lunchtime dish. 

You will want to prepare the following approximate amounts:

If you’re preparing a starter or lunchtime dish, cook between 80 and 100 grams of cooked fusilli pasta per person.

If you’re preparing a main evening meal, cook between 100 and 120 grams of cooked fusilli pasta per person.  

What is the Recommended Serving Size of Fusilli Pasta?

According to BUPA UK, the recommend serving size of fusilli pasta – and other pasta types – is actually considerably smaller than what you are probably already making. It’s definitely a smaller amount than I would cook for myself, for a main meal. 

The website states:

“75g is the recommended serving of dry pasta.”

BUPA UK

Fusilli pasta, dry and uncooked, would come under this category. 

So, BUPA UK recommends 75 grams of dry, uncooked fusilli pasta per person.

Can You Freeze Leftover Fusilli Pasta?

Yes, you can freeze leftover fusilli pasta. 

You will want to transfer your fusilli leftovers to an airtight container, preferably one with a lid. 

If you do not have an airtight container with a lid, you could transfer the fusilli pasta leftovers, with or without sauce, to airtight food bags, such as Ziplock-style food and freezer bags. 

If you have neither of those things, a layer of foil plus a layer of cling film, or a double layer of one/the other, can be wrapped around fusilli pasta leftovers so they can be stored in the freezer. 

You could also use the cling film + foil layer/double layer as a lid for a freezer-safe container that doesn’t have one. It just needs to be airtight. Pasta that has been exposed to the ice or cold air inside the freezer will get freezer burn, and it will be effectively ruined.
