If you’ve come to this tiny pocket of the internet, I’m going to assume that you’re a little bit like me and have absolutely no clue how much pasta to make per person. You either make enough to feed the entire British Army, or you barely make enough to feed a mouse – but how many grams of spaghetti per person are you supposed to make?

Why don’t we take a look and see what the experts say?

How Many Grams of Uncooked Spaghetti Per Person?

First and foremost, before I start getting into how many grams of spaghetti per person the rest of the world suggests, I highly recommend taking a look at the packaging of your spaghetti, if you’re cooking with store-bought pasta. Not sure how many grans of spaghetti per person you’re supposed to make? You’ll find all the answers right here, plus some tips n’ tricks!

It will usually say how many grams of raw, uncooked spaghetti you should make per person.

The Italians don’t always have pasta as a big, hearty main meal. Sometimes they have it as a starter or appetiser, or as a lunchtime dish. In such cases, the servings sizes are usually smaller.

If you’re cooking a starter or lunchtime dish, cook between 60 and 80 grams of uncooked spaghetti per person.

If you’re cooking a main evening meal, cook between 80 and 100 grams of uncooked spaghetti per person.

How Many Grams of Cooked Spaghetti Per Person?

If you already have cooked pasta and are trying to separate it into portion sizes, you will want to take into account the added weight of the water absorbed through cooking, and also any sauces of extra topping ingredients, such as meat and vegetables.

If you are measuring just cooked, leftover pasta, without sauce or other ingredients, you will want the following approximate amounts:

If you’re preparing for a starter/appetiser, serve between 80 and 100 grams of cooked spaghetti per person.

If you’re preparing for dinner/a main meal, serve between 100 and 120 grams of cooked spaghetti per person.

What is the Recommend Serving Size of Spaghetti?

According to BUPA UK, one portion size of pasta (including spaghetti) is 75 grams of uncooked, dry pasta. This does seem like the smaller end of the scale, especially when compared with the answers I’ve presented above, but you must remember that most pasta dishes will have other ingredients. They usually come in the form of sauce, meat, cheese, cream and other products, etc.

The internet, of course, has one-thousand-and-one different answers, from all sorts of different people.

If all else fails, check the back of the pasta packaging to see how much spaghetti to cook per person the manufacturer recommends!

Can You Freeze Extra Spaghetti?

Yes, you can freeze extra spaghetti…

… and there are plenty more things you can do with the leftovers, too!

As long as the spaghetti is stored in an airtight container, it will last for a few months in the freezer. You can even freeze it in airtight bags, with one portion per bag, to minimise waste as much as possible.
