Whether you savour it in the comfort of your home or share it with friends at a gathering, the humble mocha is the perfect companion for cozy mornings, afternoon pick-me-ups, or luxurious evening treats. Sip, enjoy, and let the heavenly fusion of coffee and chocolate transport you to a realm of pure delight. Here’s how to make a mocha coffee…
What is a Mocha?
A mocha is a popular coffee-based beverage that combines espresso or strong coffee with steamed milk and chocolate or cocoa powder. It’s a delightful blend of coffee and chocolate flavours, creating a rich and indulgent drink loved by many coffee enthusiasts.
How to Make a Mocha Coffee
The actual name of this coffee-chocolate beverage is thought to have come from a Yemen port city, also known as Mocha. This port was a significant hub for the coffee trade in history. The drink itself, however, originated in Italy or Europe, where it evolved into the modern mocha we know today. (Or so experts believe, anyway.)
Ingredients
Traditionally, a mocha is made with a shot of espresso. However, if you don’t have an espresso machine, you can use strong brewed coffee as a substitute.
This is what else you’ll need:
- 240ml freshly brewed strong coffee
- 120ml milk
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
- Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder (optional, for garnish)
You can use any kind of milk or plant-based substitute for this mocha coffee drink. Some plant-based milks steam and foam better than others, but I always recommend going with your favourite.
Instructions
The combination of coffee and chocolate in a mocha makes it a comforting and indulgent treat, perfect for enjoying as a pick-me-up during the day or as a relaxing beverage to savour during your leisure time.
Step One
Brew the coffee.
Prepare a cup of strong coffee using your preferred method, such as a coffee maker, French press, or espresso machine.
Step Two
Heat the milk.
In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it starts to steam, but do not let it boil. You can also heat the milk in the microwave for about 1 minute.
Step Three
Mix the cocoa and sugar.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder and granulated sugar until well combined.
Step Four
Combine the ingredients.
Pour the hot brewed coffee into your favourite mug. Add the cocoa-sugar mixture and stir until it dissolves completely in the coffee. Then, pour the steamed milk into the mug and mix well. Finally, add the vanilla extract and give it another stir.
Step Five
Top it off.
If desired, add a dollop of whipped cream on top of your mocha. You can also sprinkle some chocolate shavings or a little cocoa powder for an extra touch of indulgence.
Step Six
Enjoy!
Your homemade mocha is now ready to be savoured! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the delightful combination of coffee and chocolate flavours.
Feel free to adjust the sweetness or cocoa intensity to suit your taste preferences. You can also experiment with adding a dash of cinnamon or a splash of flavoured syrup for variations. Enjoy your mocha as a warm and comforting beverage on a chilly day or cool it down with some ice for a refreshing iced mocha during hot weather.
