Ingredients

The ingredients you’ll find here are enough to give you one regular drink. If you’d like to make two, three, or more drinks, keep scrolling. There are measurements for multiple drinks down below.

Here’s the ingredients you’ll need to make this rum blueberry smash cocktail:

  • Rum – 60ml
  • Ginger ale – 120ml
  • Lemon juice – 22.5ml
  • Ice – crushed
  • Brown sugar – 1 tablespoon
  • Blueberries – 30g approx.
  • Lime – wedge, for garnish
  • Mint leaves – 4 to 6, for garnish

Equipment

You don’t need a cocktail shaker or anything else out of your cocktail making kit, providing you have a muddler. You could probably substitute another kitchen item for a muddler, too.

This is what you’ll need to make this boozy beverage:

  • Muddler
  • Glass – highball/lowball/tall, at least 235ml

Step-By-Step: Rum Blueberry Smash Cocktail Recipe

This vibrant cocktail is not only easy to make but also a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, perfect for any occasion. So, the next time you’re in the mood for something fruity and refreshing, remember this rum blueberry smash cocktail recipe.

Step One: Chill the Glass

Pop some ice in your glass. It doesn’t matter what kind of ice you use, because you’re going to pour it out before replacing it with fresh, new ice.

The purpose of the initial, “old” ice is to make the glass cold. That’s the only purpose. It doesn’t matter if it melts in the glass because you’re going to pour it out anyway.

Step Two: Muddle, Muddle

Grab your glass, then add the brown sugar, the lemon juice, plus the blueberries. Remember to keep a handful of blueberries to the side for garnishing the drink when you’re done.

Use a muddler to smash the blueberries, lemon juice, and brown sugar together. You don’t need to turn it into a fruity pulp, though; you just need the sugar to dissolve and the blueberries to be slightly smashed. The skin should be split on each of them, at least.

Step Three: Ice, Ice Baby

Once the muddle has worked its magic, you should add ice – as much or as little as you’d like, obviously.

I personally like to fill my glass with drinks like this, especially on a hot summer’s day. In my mind, the ice turns into water, which means I’m technically drinking water along with my booze.

It makes perfect sense, right?

Step Four: Add the Rest

Once the blueberry, lemon juice, and brown sugar are smashed, mixed, and dissolved, and you’ve added your ice, it’s time to add the rest of the ingredients.

Add the rum first. Just pour it over the top of the ice and sugar-fruit mix.

Next, add enough ginger ale to taste, or to fill the glass.

Make Rum Blueberry Smash Cocktail a Mocktail!

If you want to turn this boozy beverage into a non-alcoholic one, replace the 60ml of alcoholic rum with non-alcoholic rum, such as Clean R by Clean Co, a non-alcoholic alternative to rum, or the ones you’ll find in 21 Non-Alcoholic Alternatives.

Switch the Booze

White rum is a great choice for blueberries and ginger ale in this recipe, but you could use several other boozy beverages instead. These include:

  • Vodka
  • Flavoured vodka, such as vanilla vodka
  • Tropical liqueur, such as
  • Peach Schnapps

Switch the Mixers

If you’re adding vodka, tropical liqueur, or Peach Schnapps instead of rum, you might also want to consider replacing the ginger ale mixer with something else, such as lemonade, sparkling water, tonic water, or similar.

Switch the Ratios

If you’d like a less boozy beverage, replace some of the rum with extra ginger ale, some lemonade, or tonic water, etc.

Don’t forget: the more ice you add, the more watered-down your drink will be as it melts.

Top Tip

Pop blueberries in the freezer to use instead of/alongside ice cubes. Think of them as edible ice cubes!

Top Tip #2

Soak blueberries or other fruits in alcohol, such as white rum or vodka, before using them as ice cubes, garnish, or other additions to your cocktail.
