A tasty, warming winter treat, the humble hot chocolate is one of those staples that we just couldn’t live without. Interestingly, for such a popular drink, no one really knows where the drink first originated, but there is some evidence to support the idea that Ancient Mayan civilisations were drinking the stuff as far back as 500BC. I doubt they would have had anything quite as tasty as this Nutella Amaretto hot chocolate recipe, though.

How to Make Nutella Amaretto Hot Chocolate UK

Unless you’re planning on making this hot chocolate recipe in a slow cooker, it will take literally five minutes to whip up. As long as you have the ingredients to hand (and there are only 3 of them in total), you could be sat on the couch, boozy hot chocolate in hand, watching your very favourite movie in mere moments!

Note: Please drink responsibly.

Equipment

If you’re making this Nutella Amaretto hot chocolate recipe in a saucepan, you’ll need the following:

  • Saucepan
  • Whisk or wooden spoon
  • Teaspoon (and a knife to help with scraping Nutella off the spoon)
  • Stove/hob
  • Tablespoon
  • Cup/mug

You can, of course, switch the stove/hob for a microwave, and the saucepan for a microwave-safe cup or mug.

There’s also the option to make this hot chocolate recipe in a slow cooker (or crock pot, if you’re American), and in a milk frother.

I recommended proceeding with caution if you plan to use Nutella in The Velvetiser. You can read why right here: What Does a Velvetiser Do?.

Ingredients

To make this boozy hot chocolate, you’ll need just three ingredients:

  • Nutella
  • Amaretto
  • Milk or milk substitute

Any kind of milk can be used. I like semi-skimmed pasteurized cow’s milk, personally.

You could always use almond milk, soya milk, UHT (long-life) milk, oat milk, or any other kind of milk, but the recipe might need to be tweaked a little bit – more Nutella to help thicken things up, for example.

Ingredient Amounts

If you’re making a single cup or mug of Nutella Amaretto hot chocolate, I recommend grabbing the mug you intend to drink it from, filling it three-quarters of the way with milk, then pouring that into the saucepan.

Don’t fill the cup or mug too much. Milk expands as it heats up. A little whisking will help make it frothy and foamy, too.

Next, start with roughly 2 tablespoons of Nutella. You can always add more, but you can’t take some away if you accidentally add too much.

I recommend using roughly the same amount of Amaretto as Nutella, so approximately 2 tablespoons.

If you intend to make this drink in a slow cooker, simply add 2 tablespoons of Nutella and 2 tablespoons of Amaretto for every three-quarter cup of milk. Then, add a little more, if necessary.

Don’t be afraid to play around with the ingredient amounts a little, to find the right combo for your taste.

  • ¾ cup or mug of cold milk
  • 2 tablespoons Nutella
  • 2 tablespoons Amaretto

Nutella Amaretto Hot Chocolate Recipe Steps

You can whip up this Nutella Amaretto hot chocolate in a saucepan, in certain milk frothers, in the microwave, and even in a slow cooker.

You can batch-make the drink for parties and gatherings or make a single cup at a time.

And, even better than that, it’s such a simple recipe, with lots of different possible tweaks and substitutions. I guarantee you’ll fall in love with it.

Step One

First of all, you’re going to need to warm up the milk. You don’t want it super-hot, so don’t boil it. You’ll want it to be warm enough to be able to melt the Nutella, however.

Warm your milk in a saucepan, over a low-to-medium heat, stirring regularly.

Try not to let the milk boil, but don’t worry too much if it does. These things happen. Just remember to skim that weird film away from the top of the boiled milk; otherwise, you’ll have a slimy chunk right in the middle of your hot drink. I hate that stuff, don’t you?

Step Two

When the milk is warm enough, add your Nutella, then continually whisk, or stir.

In my experience, whisking is better and gives you a richer, creamier hot chocolate.

It should only take a couple of minutes for the Nutella to completely melt and mix in. You should continue warming and stirring for maybe 3 or 4 minutes. Again, make sure the milky mix doesn’t boil, keeping the heat on the lower side of low-medium.

Step Three

It’s now time to add the boozy bit.

Pour in the Amaretto, stirring as you go, and then continue to heat and stir for just one or two minutes more.

You’re almost done, I promise you! Your Nutella Amaretto hot chocolate is nearly ready for you to drink.

Step Four

Once everything is nicely mixed and wonderfully warm, it’s time to pour your drink into your favourite cup, add your favourite toppings, and then sit down to drink a grownup drink that you totally deserve after the hard day you’ve had!

Substitutions & Tweaks

Squirty cream and marshmallows on the top are optional, but they certainly do help to finish the whole drink off quite nicely. You could add all sorts of finishing touches, such as Flakes, sprinkles, sauces, and more. The possibilities are endless. (Just don’t think about the calorie count…)

If you’d like dairy-free milk substitutes, I recommend looking at the following:

  • Soy milk
  • Rice milk
  • Coconut milk – great for a silky-smooth finish
  • Cashew milk – great for a rich and creamy hot chocolate
  • Hazelnut milk – great for a creamy, thick, and foamy texture
  • Oat milk – great if you want to be environmentally friendly
  • Almond milk

You can also use a water-milk mix, but your hot chocolate will likely turn out a little runnier and not quite as creamy as just milk on its own. You could even combine different plant milks.

Experiment! Who knows what magic you might create!

Bear in mind that milk substitutes like almond and hazelnut milk will add extra flavour to your Nutella and Amaretto hot chocolate. Coconut milk will add a coconut taste. Hazelnut milk will add a hazelnut taste. You get the idea.
